AFT | Indonesia Remains a Market to Watch as Local Players Focus On Growth | JAKARTA, Indonesia – (via ACN Newswire) – The Asia Video Industry Association (AVIA) hosted over 200 delegates at its recent Indonesia in View conference that took place in Jakarta on 31 August.
According to Media Partners Asia (MPA), total video industry revenues in Indonesia are expected to rise from US$2.5 billion in 2023 to US$3.7 billion in 2028. Industry leaders from across the TV and streaming space spoke at the conference.
Netflix Senior Manager of Business Development (Indonesia, Thailand, Malaysia) Tizar Patria was bullish about the business as it grew, focusing on market-relevant content and a superior user experience. Clarissa Tanoesoedibjo, Managing Director of Vision+, noted that an ecosystem that supported pay TV, free to air, and streaming was needed and that strategic market partners were essential to maximize prospects. WeTV and iflix Indonesia Country Head Lesley Simpson agreed that OTT development is here and can be realized through strategic collaborations.
Indonesia is Southeast Asia’s largest video content market, making content competition fierce. Titan Hermawan, President Director, MNC Pictures, saw fresh scriptwriters’ opportunity in creating original IP and tales. Angga Dwimas Sasongko, Founder, Director, Visinema Group, prioritized talent pipelines to increase content production. The panelists agreed with Creative Stew Founder & CEO Abid Hussain that business structures needed to alter for producers. Netflix Director of Public Policy Southeast Asia Ruben Hattari said the sector needed to broaden its expertise. Indonesia was the only country without a production incentive plan, therefore more needed to be done there to assist industry growth.
AVIA’s Coalition Against Piracy’s most recent annual consumer surveys found that 54% of Indonesian consumers access pirate services, the fourth highest rate in the region. At CAP’s State of Piracy Summit, which ran alongside Indonesia in View, CAP and the Video Streaming Association of Indonesia (AVISI) (https://bit.ly/44SthRT) inked an MOU in Jakarta on 30 August to fight piracy together. The MOU was a major step forward for AVIA and AVISI in fighting online piracy and protecting Indonesia’s creative and media industries.
Indonesia in View focused on premium video monetization in the afternoon. Chris Mottershead, Commercial Director APAC, Publica, said programmatic would play a bigger role in monetization as advertisers plan less ahead. Sharing insights from other markets, Mottershead stated that FAST was a fantastic approach to lure back consumers who left the pay environment since they could cycle from OTT to FAST and then back to OTT when they could afford the subscription. A more integrated buy-side, sell-side, and technology strategy will continue to expand and evolve the programmatic industry, according to PubMatic Director of Customer Success SEAK Khin Mu Yar Soe.
The conference concluded with a keynote address by MNC Group Executive Chairman Hary Tanoesoedibjo, who detailed his ambitious intentions to become a content and entertainment firm. He proposed integrating RCTI+ and Vision+ into a mega app with a two-tiered service under one brand, mixing FTA material that will be monetized through advertising and a premium membership service. By investing in better content, the service would expand its ecosystem and target Asia.
Tanoesoedibjo said they will sell the data infrastructure while preserving the IPTV business and bundling services for existing and future users when asked about MNC Play sold rumors.
